Spies, London, Keira, Ben, quality cinematography, beautiful soundtrack: what could possibly go wrong?
With Graham Norton and beyond: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024). Plus, I already know this is my favorite genre and will overlook any flaws. But when the dialogue in Episode 1 moved slowly, several moments dragged on too long, and Quinten’s attempted dialogue scenes left me alone, I had a hard time calming down.
I was wrong
They’re certainly just fleshing out the characters and setting a unique tone. As the episodes dragged on, I realized that this show wasn’t going to deliver. Not just disjointed, but with little to no characters that I actually cared about.
I’m so sad about what could have been
Honestly, I don’t know how the magic happens, but I was deeply drawn to the stories and characters of Slow Horses, The Americans, The Bureau, The Diplomat, and even The Old Man, despite all their flaws. Add to that the lack of stakes and the many omissions of basic details, and the boring to interesting ratio was too high to be enjoyable. Yes, all the basic elements of espionage are present in Black Doves, but somehow there was no salt in the recipe, and by E03 I was already speeding through the reading.
